Audit and Rebate Program Announced

Citizens Electric Corporation (CEC) has recently contracted with ASERusa to conduct in-home energy audits for its members. In addition, CEC is offering a rebate program and giving away weatherization products in its local offices located in Ste. Genevieve, Perryville and Altenburg.

According to Barb Casper, Manager of Member Services, "We are committed to helping our members use electricity more efficiently. Currently, over 80 percent of our expenses are for power supply. The less electricity our members use, the less power that has to be produced or purchased for their needs. Furthermore, energy efficiency translates to lower bills for members and more home comfort."

ASERusa will be using diagnostic tools like a blower door and infrared camera to locate areas of heat loss in members' homes and make recommendations about how to lower their energy bills. The ASERusa technicians, who will be conducting the audits, hold multiple certifications including: Department of Energy (DOE) Energy Star Home Raters; EPA HERS Raters; and Building Performance Institute (BPI), to name a few.

Although these comprehensive audits typically cost more than $400, the cost to CEC members is $200. This includes homes and businesses up to 3,000 square feet. In addition, CEC members can receive up to $200 back for any energy efficiency improvements made in 2010 that are recommended in the audit.

CEC is now offering rebates of $150 per ton for new geothermal systems and $125 per ton for new high efficiency air-source systems. Eligibility is limited to existing homes converting from less efficient electric resistance or electric furnace systems. CEC will also rebate $50 on new Energy Star-rated clothes washer if a member has an electric water heater.
